Things have thawed out here a little and I’ve seen the sun a little this weekend so I’m inspired with more ideas of things you can do quickly to get and feel organized.
- Make your bed. Even if you accomplish nothing else the rest of the day, you’ll have accomplished this and can come home to a clean bed to lay down your head. It really starts the day off on the right foot, too, and once you start, you won’t want to stop.
- Go through your grocery & shopping bags. You may have a drawer full of them or have them spewing out of the space next to your refrigerator. I’m sure you don’t need all of them. You are sure you don’t need all of them. Put a paper shopping bag in each closet for gathering donations and use the grocery bags as trash can liners or dog clean up bags.
- Clean out your stack(s?) of magazines. If the new one has arrived and you haven’t gone through last month’s or week’s then you have permission to toss without even opening it. When were you going to have time to look at previous ones if you can’t look at today’s? I know this is hard because I am a visual person and have loved magazines for years. I finally cut down my subscriptions to 3 and I really do read them. You can donate the unread ones to Goodwill, a nursing home, library, or maybe your favorite nail salon.
- Unsubscribe from junk email. The stores that send you reminders of sales (hello, President’s Day!) and free shipping are not your friends. They just want you to buy more stuff to pack into your already stuffed closet. Unsubscribe from these completely and only go to their sites when you actually need something. This will require diligence because they always find a way to suck you back in but be strong. You are in control of your inbox!
- Make your To Do list. Take a little time this morning or in the evening at the end of the day to write out your To Do list. Even if you don’t strike everything off (those go to the next day and so on) you’ll get so much more accomplished than if you sit and wonder “I know I’m supposed to be working on something, now what was it…?” Do the really awful tasks first or use a timer and commit to working on something for 20 just minutes. This helps you chip away at the project so that it is less daunting.
Remember, you’ve got to start somewhere and gaining some momentum by doing some small tasks is the perfect way to get going.
